DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a supervisory position involving responsibility for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the transportation facilities involving a moderately large fleet of buses of a school district. The safety factor is of utmost importance because children are involved. Consequently, the incumbent at all times must be aware of the need to observe special cautionary activities. This class differs from the Head Bus Driver, Head Automotive Mechanic or other equivalent titles because of the overall direction of the transportation program, including the day-to-day supervision of maintenance and repair staff as well as Bus Drivers. The work is performed under general supervision allowing considerable leeway for the exercise of independent judgement. Supervision is exercised over the work of School Bus Drivers and Automotive Mechanics and related personnel.
ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school and either: (a) three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment or (b) five years of experience in the operation of multi-passenger vehicles or the dispatching of motor equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATION: Eligibility for the appropriate level New York State Driver’s License at time of application. Possession of license at time of appointment and must maintain the license throughout the term of employment.
The successful candidate must take, pass and be reachable on the “List of Eligibles” for the Rensselaer County Civil Service examination for Supervisor of Transportation or already be reachable on an existing “List of Eligibles”.
